These pages will explain what happens if you decide to have a go at BMX racing, the equipment you’ll need and what goes on at a BMX race event. If you need anymore information then feel free to email me or ask a question on the Decoy forum where you are sure to get a friendly & helpful reply.
At your first event.
At most BMX races the practice sessions will start at around 10am with age grouped gate practice at around 11am until 11.45am. If you want to race you will need to register before 11am , you will be asked what age you are which club you are in and what race number you will be racing on. Rider sheets will be posted sometime after 11am, this is a list of all riders entered for the event which gives you the chance to check you have been entered in the correct age group, some time after this the organising club will put up the moto sheets, this list tells you what race number you will be in and what gate position in each race, there will usually be somebody on the start hill to tell you which gate you are in so don’t worry if you forget your gate number. You will get 3 motos to race then either an A or B final or semi finals depending how you got on in your motos. Get yourself set up on the gate and ready to race.

Depending on how many riders are in your age group the points are calculated in different ways, If there are less than 8 (a full gate) you will race as a grand prix which means all of your moto points count towards your overall position on the day, this means you could win the final but not necessarily win the event overall. If there are more than 8 riders you will have to race to either get into the A or B final or if there are enough riders you may have to ride semi finals or even quarter finals, but with this system as long as you get to the final you have the chance of winning overall from one race. It’s not as complicated as it sounds so don’t worry too much, just enjoy your racing a see how you get on. There will always be other riders from your club who will have done it before so just ask someone if you are not sure what you should be doing.
